The Dutch declare unilaterally that they are not bound by the Renville Treaty, and stop the ceasefire. On December 19, 1948, Army Commander General Spoor Noord Simons leads military aggression II to attack Yogyakarta, the capital of the Republic at the time.
Soekarno-Hatta are arrested and exiled to the island of Bangka. General Soedirman who is plagued by ill, goes to the south and leads the guerrilla war for seven months.
The Dutch declare Indonesia has not existed anymore. From the deep of the forest, Soedirman broadcast that the Republic of Indonesia is still there with its strong National Army (TNI). Soedirman makes Java become guerrilla war zone, and causes the Dutch ran out of logistics and time.
The union between TNI and the people win the war. When the Roem-Royen agreement is signed, the Dutch recognize the sovereignty of Indonesia.

In 1942 Japan invades Indonesia. In East Java several kiais (kiai, a venerated elders of a pesantren/Islamic learning institution) from different pesantrens are arrested on account of fomenting resistance. KH (Kiai Haji, or Hajj Kiai) Hasyim Asy’ari as the leader of Pondok Pesantren Tebu Ireng is arrested because he fights against the Japanese. The arrest causes insurgence in Tebu Ireng and provokes reactions from his sons, namely KH Wahid Hasyim, Karim Hasyim and Yusuf Hasyim, not to mention a host of santris (students at pesantren) such as Baidlowi (Hasyim As’ari’s son-in-law), Kang Solichin (Hasyim’s confidante) and three others Harun, Kamid and Abdi.

The story itself based on true story about the bravery of people in Soerabaja (now Surabaya). Although in the battle, Indonesia was lost, the Soerabaja people fight was always remembered.
The movie started when the Japanese lost the war and the proclamation of Indonesia Independence was spread by the Radio. The people of Soerabaja attacked and took the weapon from Japanese soldiers and swore to loyal to Indonesia.
When the British arrived in Soerabaja, the people accepted them because the British army came to handle the Japanese Soldiers. The problem arose when British did not admit the existence of Indonesia. And the climax started when a British general died in explosion. The British attacked Soerabaja, tried to conquered it but they couldn't do it without sacrificing many of their soldiers. Although in the end, Soerabaja people lost the war, there wasn't anything left in Soerabaja to be claimed by British and the war had just began.

During the independence revolution, there are brave men, desperate thieves, determined soldiers, traitors and selfish traders. Captain Bondan leads his battalion and together with the people, they fight the Dutch. But the Dutch discovers the battalion’s headquarter, and during an assault, Captain Bondan dies. Tjoet Nja' Dhien is based on the life of Cut Nyak Dhien, an Acehnese strategist, political mentor, and freedom fighter. Born to an aristocratic family in Aceh Besar in 1848, Dhien married Teuku Cek Ibrahim Lamnga at a young age. After her father and husband died in separate attempts to repel the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army during the Second Aceh Expedition, Dhien swore revenge against the Dutch colonials.
Dhien started leading troops in the war against the Dutch, eventually uniting her forces with Teuku Umar's.They married in 1880 and she became his chief strategist and political mentor,eventually taking control of the united forces after his death in 1899. The continued fighting took a toll on her health, as she slowly became more fragile.
The Dutch military aggression in December 1948 causes Sri Mulyani to be expelled from her hometown in Maguwo, Central Java. The naive Sri reaches the Panjen region and meets Indonesian guerrilla troops led by Capt. Hadi Sugito, who is doing recruitment. On the same day, Udjo, a nobleman’s son, is tricked by his girlfriend, Wiwid, to sign up for the recruitment. In addition, two young villagers, Ahok and Tumino later join Toar, another guerrilla fighter, the inept Cpl. Jono and Lt. Bowo, Capt. Hadi Sugito’s most trusted man. When Lt. Kuyt’s Dutch troops attack their base, Wiwid and her brother, Yayuk, are captured. Impulsively, Cpl. Jono, leads the troop in a counter-attack but they are cornered and captured. Fortunately, Lt. Bowo manages to rescue and free them. Later, Capt. Hadi dismisses Cpl Jono and his men for the impulsive operation and causes them to be excluded in a major mission to Yogyakarta on March 1, 1949, led by Lt. Colonel Suharto. However, the morale of Cpl. Jono and his troops remain intact and they secretly intercept the Dutch in a daring mission. They are known as elite forces, the Siliwangi Division, and acknowledged in history as independence heroes.
